For children enrolled at Applied Behavioral Learning Services.
What We Do
Theater Group is led by Taylor Young, MSW of the Clinical Services Department at ABLS. It meets every week for a 50 minute-hour at our site in Newton. Each session typically runs 8-10 weeks. Members of group partake in a variety of drama-based exercises that aim to promote teamwork, social skills, creativity, interpretation of non-verbal cues, emotional identification/regulation as well as problem-solving skills. The format of group will be consistent week to week, providing a safe and secure experience for the members.
Why it Works
Theatre Group utilizes structured drama games that have been shown to be beneficial to individuals with ASD. For example, the group allows participants to experience a new way of processing and expressing emotions. Additionally, by engaging in fun, relaxed improv activities and role plays, often under the safety net of pretending to be someone else, participants can practice problem-solving as well as perspective taking skills.
Who We Are
Ms. Young obtained her Master’s degree from Boston College School of Social Work in 2016. She earned her undergraduate degree at Northeastern University where she studied Philosophy and Psychology. She has over 10 years of professional experience working with children with developmental delays and disabilities and their families.
